Autopsy

Autopsy is a graphical digital-forensics platform built on The Sleuth Kit that analyses disk images and recovers files, browser history and artefacts.

Legal & ethical use. Handle evidence according to your legal and organisational procedures; work on copies, never originals. Use this tool only on systems, networks and data that you own or have explicit written permission to test. Unauthorised access or scanning can break computer-misuse laws (for example Pakistan's Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, and equivalents elsewhere). Practise in your own lab or in authorised environments such as CTFs.

What it is used for

  • Analyse a practice disk image in a forensics course
  • Recover deleted files and build a timeline

Key features

  • Case management
  • Keyword search and file carving
  • Timeline and ingest modules

Installation

Download the installer from autopsy.com (Windows) or see the Sleuth Kit docs for Linux.

Beginner usage guide
