Cyber Security Career in Pakistan: Roles, Skills and a Roadmap
By CyberSecurity.pk · Updated Oct 27, 2026
Cyber security offers many entry points, and you do not need to start as a hacker. Here are common roles and a practical way to prepare.
Common roles
- SOC analyst: watches alerts and investigates suspicious activity.
- Penetration tester / red teamer: tests systems with permission.
- Security engineer: builds and hardens systems and tooling.
- Incident responder / forensic analyst: contains and investigates breaches.
- GRC analyst: policies, risk and audits.
- Application security engineer: reviews code and designs for flaws.
A roadmap
- Foundations (1–3 months): networking, Linux, Windows basics, a scripting language.
- Security basics: follow a learning path and read the tutorials.
- Hands-on practice: the practice range, then live CTF competitions. Build a short write-up for each challenge you solve.
- Specialise: defence (logs, SIEM, detection), offence (web, network) or cloud.
- Certifications (optional but common): CompTIA Security+ for fundamentals, eJPT or PNPT for entry-level pentesting, OSCP for advanced pentesting, and CEH as a widely recognised name. Check each vendor's own site for current requirements and prices.
- Show your work: a GitHub with scripts and notes, CTF rankings, written reports and talks at cybersecurity events.
