Penetration Testing in Pakistan: Process, Scope and Reporting

By CyberSecurity.pk · Updated Oct 27, 2026

A penetration test (pentest) is a controlled, authorised simulation of an attack against a system, application or network. Its purpose is to find real weaknesses, prove their impact and give clear steps to fix them.

Vulnerability assessment vs penetration test

A vulnerability assessment lists likely weaknesses, usually with automated scanners. A penetration test goes further: a person tries to exploit what was found, chain issues together and show what an attacker could really reach.

The stages of a pentest

  1. Scoping and authorisation: exactly which systems, dates and techniques are allowed, signed by the owner. Nothing starts without this.
  2. Reconnaissance: gathering information about the target.
  3. Scanning and enumeration: finding services, versions and entry points.
  4. Exploitation: safely proving that a weakness can be abused.
  5. Post-exploitation: judging impact (what data or systems could be reached), without causing damage.
  6. Reporting and retest: a clear report, then a retest after fixes.

What a good report contains

An executive summary in plain language, each finding with severity (often CVSS), evidence, business impact, and concrete remediation steps. Findings should reference public identifiers such as CWE and, where relevant, CVE records. Browse real examples in the vulnerability database.

What to ask for if you are a business

  • Written scope and rules of engagement, and a signed authorisation.
  • A tester who will keep your data confidential and delete test data.
  • A report you can act on, plus a free or agreed retest.
  • A plan for the safe handling of any credentials or data found.

Learn it yourself

Start with the ethical hacking guide, practise in the practice range and compete in CTF competitions. If you are building a website or app that needs to launch securely, a development partner such as webcuber.com can cover the build while an independent tester checks it.
