FLOSS

FLOSS (FLARE Obfuscated String Solver) automatically extracts obfuscated and stack strings from malware binaries in addition to plain strings.

Legal & ethical use. Use this tool only on systems, networks and data that you own or have explicit written permission to test. Unauthorised access or scanning can break computer-misuse laws (for example Pakistan's Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, and equivalents elsewhere). Practise in your own lab or in authorised environments such as CTFs.

What it is used for

  • Recover hidden strings that the `strings` utility misses
  • Speed up triage of an obfuscated sample

Key features

  • Static, stack and decoded strings
  • Emulation-based decoding
  • Cross-platform

Installation

Install a standalone release or `pip install flare-floss` as described in the README.

Beginner usage guide

Run it on a practice sample in a VM and compare the output with plain `strings` to see what was hidden.

Example commands

Run these only against your own lab or authorised targets. Placeholder addresses such as 192.0.2.x are documentation ranges.

Extract strings
floss sample.exe
